The Northern Lights are one of the most spectacular phenomena on earth. They form when charged particles from the sun enter the earth's atmosphere and collide with oxygen and nitrogen. The lights are seen around the poles of the northern and southern hemispheres where they form circles called Auroral Ovals. The Northern Lights form within these circles and that is where the best locations to see the lights are. Iceland is right in the middle of the area where the Northern Lights form most often.

Northern Lights Show

There is a great exhibition in Garðskagaviti Lighthouse where the Northern Lights are explained in detail, from their origin in the Sun to the great displays on Earth.

Guests will learn about the sun, the solar wind and how the charged particles from the Sun travel to Earth and form the Northern Lights. Locations, myths, believes, height, color and the science behind the lights all presented with excellent illustrations and photographs in a fantastic showroom within the biggest lighthouse in Iceland.

Great location

Garðskagi is a great location to observe the Northern Lights. With its Restaurant, bar and restroom facilities and the ability to turn off all outdoor lights it is ideal to wait for the Northern Lights to make an appearance. It is some distance away from town so there is very little light pollution. There is much to see in Garðskagi with its two beautiful lighthouses and beaches, even at night. Garðskagi is only 12 km away from Keflavík International Airport 40 minutes drive from Reykjavík.
